Should I Buy a Vegan Chapstick with Sunscreen/SPF?
With so much controversy surrounding the toxic properties of sunscreen, this could be nominated as the skin care question of the year. As we all know, the purpose of sunscreen is to protect the skin from harmful exposure from the sun.
This exposure (especially in large and frequent doses) may lead to premature aging, sun spots, cell damage, and skin cancer. So, is it important to shield that thin layer of skin encapsulating your luscious lips?
Heck yeah!
However, it’s equally important to be aware of the ingredients that are providing your lips with this important shield of protection.
Not all ingredients are created equal. Hard-to-pronounce words like oxybenzone (also known as benzophenone-3), octinoxate, avobenzone, octisalate and octylcrylene may cause chapping, flaking, and peeling. These ingredients should be avoided when purchasing the perfect vegan lip balm.
Instead, look for chapsticks with mineral sunblocks such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, which are less likely to provoke allergic reactions or irritation.
Beeswax: Is it Really the Bee’s Knees When it Comes to Lip Balm?
It may seem obvious that beeswax is not vegan or cruelty-free; it is acquired by melting honeycomb with boiling water, straining it, and cooling it.
Many bees are killed or have their wings and legs torn off because of haphazard handling during this process. Sucks, right?
It’s important to note that there are some sneaky brands that market their lip balms as being cruelty-free and even vegan, that do contain beeswax.
I’m not going to go on a product marketing rant, but I do feel it’s relevant to specifically bring attention to this ingredient because it is extremely common in natural lip care products.
So, when contemplating your next lip balm purchase, take an extra moment to check the ingredient list and ensure beeswax is not on it!
Other Non-Vegan Ingredients that are Commonly Found in Lip Balm
These ingredients include tallow/stearic acid (from rendered beef fat) and carmine/cochineal (from crushed female cochineal insect). Although there are tons of non-vegan ingredients that can be found in generic chapsticks, these are among the most common.
Special Considerations for Those with Sensitive and/or Dry Lips…
If your lips tend to chap easily or if you live in a cold, dry environment, it’s best to avoid artificial fragrances, flavors, and colors.
These ingredients are known to dry out the lips and even lead to irritation.
Instead, look for lip balms that contain plant-based oils like coconut oil, sweet almond oil, and olive oil.
These oils don’t just sit on top of your lips and look pretty; they work hard to deeply penetrate skin tissues and provide long-lasting and natural moisture.
