A Guide to Vegan Birth Control

On the whole, going vegan is straightforward. Swap your cow’s milk for almond milk, switch to cruelty-free makeup, and replace those snakeskin shoes in your closet with animal-free alternatives.

But what about your birth control?

It’s possible that this hasn’t even crossed your mind – at least not in a vegan sense, anyway. But the reality is that most popular forms of birth control aren’t vegan, and either contain animal products or were, at some point in the process, tested on animals.

Condoms and Other Barrier Methods

Condoms are a popular birth control method for a reason. They’re inexpensive, accessible, and don’t require a prescription for use. When used correctly, they’ll protect against sexually transmitted diseases and prevent pregnancy.

The bad news? Most well-known condom brands are made from latex, which uses the milk derivative casein during processing. Yuck!

Fortunately, there are latex-free options available – some marketed toward individuals with latex allergies, but as more people have adopted plant-based diets, some are advertised specifically as vegan products. Some brands also offer natural rubber latex condoms that do not utilize casein during manufacturing, ensuring a vegan-friendly final product.

Glyde

Glyde condoms have been certified by The Vegan Society since 2006. Made from a natural rubber latex, the condoms are free of parabens, use only natural colorings and flavors, and are pH neutral. Glydes are available in 13 different varieties so that you can find the perfect product for you and your partner.

Kimono

Kimonos are ultra-thin vegan-friendly condoms made from natural latex rubber. Kimonos are lubricated and 20% thinner than other condom brands, for a natural, comfortable feel. Sir Richard's

Made from 100% natural latex, Sir Richard's condoms are certified by The Vegan Society and PETA-approved. The condoms are free from spermicide, glycerin, and parabens, and have minimal latex odor. Every purchase also gives back – each purchase of Sir Richard's condom donates a condom to someone in need. Sir Richard's offers many different types, as well as variety packs, so you can find out which option you like best.

The ultra-thin condoms from L. are made from sustainably harvested natural latex. Cruelty-free and vegan certified, L. condoms are free of glycerin, N9, and parabens. The company also follows a 1 for 1 principle – every purchase means a condom is donated to someone in a developing country. The product is available in 3- or 12- packs on Amazon.

FemCap

FemCap is a reusable, hormone-free, latex-free option to help women control their fertility. The cap is coated with spermicidal gel and placed over the cervix. FemCap needs to be inserted before sexual arousal, so it does require a bit of planning, but it’s a great option for women looking for birth control that doesn’t contain latex and doesn’t mess with your natural hormones.

Oral Contraceptives

When you get into hormonal birth control pills, things get a little more complicated. There are two main issues when it comes to the Pill, the first of which being that most brands contain lactose, a milk derivative (man, what is milk doing in all these different items?).

While it’s impossible to research every single brand on the market, all of the major brands I looked up did contain lactose in their list of ingredients. Some also included magnesium stearate, another non-vegan ingredient.

In addition to the use of animal-based ingredients, it’s possible that hormonal birth control pills may not be as safe as we assume. Studies have found links between the use of hormonal birth control pills and an increase in the risk of developing depression and blood clots.

Medicine, as is veganism, is a highly personal issue. While birth control pills are most known for preventing pregnancy, some women are prescribed the pills for other reasons, like regulating periods and managing acne.

As we mention in our vegan baby formula article, veganism is not so much adhering to a certain ideology as much as it is causing the least amount of harm that you can. If you need to be prescribed the pills to manage a particular condition, that is a personal decision that you can make.

However, if you’re only looking for ways to prevent pregnancy, you may decide to use a vegan-friendly alternative to hormonal pills.

Remember that birth control pills don’t protect against STDs/HIV/AIDS, so be sure to use barrier methods like condoms if necessary.

Are IUDs Vegan?

Intra-uterine devices, or IUDs, have a lot of pros. They are safe, low-maintenance, and super effective when compared to other forms of birth control. In fact, birth control pills, which are currently the most popular form of reversible birth control, are 20 times more likely to result in unplanned pregnancy than IUDs.

This could be due to the fact that IUDs erase the potential for human error – there’s no remembering to take your pill or insert your ring since the device is put in place by your doctor.

While they’re super effective at preventing pregnancy, it’s important to note that IUDs do not protect against HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases. You’ll need a barrier method if you need protection beyond preventing pregnancy.

IUDs come in two forms: hormonal and non-hormonal.

Non-hormonal

ParaGard, currently the only non-hormonal IUD, prevents pregnancy thanks to a small copper filament wrapped around the T-shaped implant. It provides the same super-effective pregnancy prevention without the use of any hormones – great news for those who don’t want to have a baby but don’t want to clutter their body with external hormones. The ParaGard can last for up to 12 years.

Without the use of hormones, ParaGard is the most vegan-friendly IUD option. Its only ingredients are a polyethylene frame and copper filaments. However, remember that all prescription drugs and vaccines in the United States have been tested on animals at some point, even if they themselves do not contain animal products.

Hormonal

The hormonal IUDs currently available are Mirena, Kyleena, Liletta, and Skyla. All of these birth control methods use progestin to prevent pregnancy. This material closely mimics the hormone progesterone, the hormone our bodies make naturally, and prevents pregnancy for anywhere from 3-6 years.

On the positive side, it makes it so you don’t have to worry about packing your pills with you or interrupting the moment to grab a condom. However, the hormones do have side effects, so it’s up to you to weigh the pros and cons as far as the medication’s effect on your body.

Pharmaceutical companies are super cagey about where their ingredients come from – after all, have you ever really thought about where your meds come from before now? Even after research, I still haven’t found a straight answer to the question “where does progestin come from?”. As I understand it at the moment, progestin can be made synthetically, but if you’re considering a hormonal IUD, have a conversation with your doctor or pharmacist about your concerns.

Protecting Animals – and Your Body!

It’s amazing how many ways animal products can sneak into your life – even into your bedroom! Vegans who aren’t ready or are simply unwilling to have children, but still want to enjoy the benefits of the act, can still choose from a range of birth control options that are either completely vegan or come close to it.

For those who want to stick firmly to vegan values, opting for a plant-based, vegan-friendly condom or barrier method will be the best course of action. Since all prescription drugs in the United States go through animal testing, this is the only way to prevent pregnancy without a prescription from your doctor.

If you decide to use a birth control method that does contain hormones, such as the Pill or an IUD, you’ll need to accept that there will be some un-vegan qualities about it, either through the ingredient list, or the processing methods.

However, it’s important to remember that veganism is not about perfectionism or popularity. It’s a good thing to be responsible about your fertility, and if your worst offense in modern society is the little bit of lactose in your birth control pill, that is an entirely fair choice to make. Base your actions on your own principle – not holding blindly to a certain ideology.

Thankfully, we live in a time where plenty of vegan-friendly products – even condoms! – are available in stores and online. Consider your (and your partner’s) needs, as well as your own health and body, as you make the best decision for you and your lifestyle.

The vegan culture has spent decades trying to get on its feet. It was only a couple decades ago that the idea of ‘going vegan’ was unrealistic for a lot of people. The sentiment was nice, but the difficulty involved in making such a big lifestyle adjustment wasn’t practical.

Don’t get me wrong – going vegan can still be a challenge – but doing it now seems to raise a lot fewer eyebrows than it did even five years ago.

Regardless, the stigma is dissolving. The vegan movement is consuming non-vegans every day and, like a leaf uses sunlight to synthesize nutrition from lesser elements, veganism is encouraging meat munchers to carve healthier diets out of less destructive ingredients.

Veganism is so popular these days that the term no longer just applies to food. If you look, you’ll see all sorts of products advertising themselves as cruelty-free, organic, vegan alternatives – from soaps and candles, to furniture, to footwear. That’s right – you can get vegan sandals.

Vegan Sandals? How on Earth Would They Make Those?

Before you read about the our favourite vegan sandals (scroll WAY down for that), you should have an introduction to the process of how they are made. The concept is strange to a lot of people. It’s important to know how and why vegan sandals have become so popular, and what makes them different from regular shoes.

The Composition

The materials used to make vegan sandals are the biggest determining factor as to their ‘vegan-ism.’ Of course, the manufacturing process and the company’s ethics are important. The materials, however, can more decidedly tell you whether the product is vegan.

Materials that you want to avoid include leather, wool, silk, snakeskin, feathers, fur, and suede. All of these materials are obtained, one way or another, through an abusive and cruel manufacturing process.

Fortunately, the tags on most footwear can tell you whether or not the materials are vegan. They might not always list “vegan” next to “polyester,” but with a bit of education, you’ll know which materials can be considered vegan or not.

Assume that shoes and sandals are not vegan unless otherwise specified. Most boots, shoes, and sandals are made from leather, suede, or other animal-based fabrics.
Look for a label that declares the product as man-made. You’re looking for something along the lines of, “100% man-made,” or “entirely synthetic.”
Be cautious of sandals made with canvas! It seems like an excellent vegan alternative, but many canvas shoes use leather soles.

The Adhesive

You’re not in the clear yet. The glue used to hold shoes and sandals together can be non-vegan, even if the materials are advertised as being 100% synthetic.

However, determining the make of the glue can be pretty tricky. Chances are, if you’re in a shoe store, about to buy a pair of sandals, you’re not going to want to do an hour’s worth of background checks on your smartphone just to figure out if the company used vegan adhesives.

Unfortunately, this is a bit of a moral dilemma. There simply aren’t as many companies making sandals that can be sold as “100% vegan.” This means that most vegans, except for the most dutiful and obligated, will have to take a dice-roll when buying synthetic sandals. Chances are, if the footwear is made by an eco-friendly company that advertises their love for the environment, the glue will be vegan.

The Coloring

Many shoe companies use animal-based dyes to color their products. This can ring true even when products are advertised as non-leather and completely synthetic.

Fortunately, animal-based dye is much less common than animal-based adhesives. It’s most likely that companies advertising 100% synthetic materials will also use synthetic dyes.

Where to Buy Vegan Sandals?

Finding vegan sandals can be tricky at the best of times. A lot of shoe stores don’t cater toward folk who are concerned about the ethics of their footwear. A lot of stores will have a few brands that are advertised as vegan or cruelty-free, but we all know how difficult it can be to find a comfortable pair of shoes.

Buying online is a particularly appealing option for a lot of vegans. When you buy online, it becomes much easier to do a background check on the companies you’re looking into. On top of that, there are more sites that are built for people who want vegan footwear. These sites will offer you a much wider selection.Buying online may provide more selection, but also makes it difficult to find a comfortable pair of shoes. Vegan shoes are notorious for being less comfortable than other shoes, and buying a pair online gives you no chance to try them on first. You might end up doing a lot of returning and rebuying.
Finding specialty stores may not be as easy as walking through your local mall. You might be surprised how many specialty shoe stores are hidden in your locale, though. Doing an online search for vegan shoe stores could lead you to some answers.

Other Considerations for Making an Ethical Purchase

Buying a vegan pair of sandals is not always the same as buying an ethical pair of sandals. PETA makes an important observation:

“Animal skin is turned into finished leather through the use of dangerous mineral salts, formaldehyde, coal-tar derivatives, cyanide-based oils and dyes, chrome, and other toxins. People who have worked in and lived near tanneries are dying of cancer caused by exposure to toxic chemicals used to process and dye the leather.”

This means that a lot of vegan companies are still exploiting resources, the environment, and our fellow humans. It’s important to ask yourself the following questions and do the relevant research, before buying a pair of sandals.

Where were the sandals made? Does the company operate out of your country? If so, do they have additional facilities in countries that are known for using cheap labor?
If the materials used are, indeed, vegan, where are they harvested? Are they done so using ethical procedures? What about the carbon footprint created during the harvesting or synthesizing processes?
Are the materials made or harvested using sustainable methods?
Does the company have a robust policy on recycling, waste reduction, good working conditions for their employees? If these things aren’t listed on the website, you have reason to suspect otherwise.
Will the Sandals last you a long time? There’s no point supporting a company that has ethical manufacturing procedures if all their products fall apart in a year. This would mean that all their consumers are contributing to a global waste problem.

The 12 Best Vegan Sandals

If you don’t want to shop around to find your vegan sandals, I don’t blame you. There’s a shocking amount of products to sift through, a ton of reading to do, and ultimately, you might still end up with a bad or unethical shoe.

While there are many “synthetic” and “vegan leather” sandals out there, only a handful label themselves as “vegan”, or include a blurb about not including animal products in their manufacturing. Therefore, we didn’t include any products that said “synthetic” simply because we don’t know if their leather or adhesive is animal based.

Also note, we included individual products here instead of brands, as most sandal companies offer a vegan line of products or a few sandals here and there, but are not 100% vegan companies.

With that said, we believe the products listed below to be the best on the market. Hopefully you can find one that will suit you!

Vegan Sandals for Women

Vegan Rain Boots: Your Best Guide to Cruelty-Free Dry Feet

We have a love-hate relationship with the rain. Our mood kind of alternates back and forth, depending on the type of rain we’re getting.

We LOVE the smell in the air after a good downpour.

Why Vegan Rain Boots?

I suppose the answer to that is the same as why you choose to live this lifestyle. You’re opposed to animal cruelty, and you’re committed to only supporting and using products that don’t condone animal suffering in any way.

The History of Rain Boots

Gum boots, galoshes, “wellies,” or water shoes, rain boots can be known by different names around the world. They were first popularized by the Duke of Wellington, Arthur Wellesley.

The first boots were a modified version of boots used by the upper class. It was mostly made from calfskin leather, a practice that should be upsetting in today’s standards. The fashion of the day required a boot that could withstand the rigors of riding and rough roads, and also be worn to dinners and events.

Thus was born the rain boot.

It wasn’t too long afterward that Mr. Goodyear, who was experimenting with vulcanized rubber, made an entirely rubber boot that could be worn by farmers who, up until then, wore open clog-type shoes. The dry foot was (naturally) a huge advantage and selling point.

It became even more popular when the Hunter brand was asked to provide over 1 million pair of rubber boots to the fighting forces of World War 1.

Because rubber rain boots are so much more functional and animal-friendly than leather boots, there doesn’t seem to be any reason why these vegan rain boots shouldn’t be on everyone’s wish list.

Before Buying a Pair…

If you’re in the market for vegan rain boots, not all boots are easily identified as being vegan. It’s tricky to figure out.

Find boots that are made from rubber or synthesized rubber. A fully rubber boot doesn’t use any animal products and is safely considered vegan.

Also, watch for insoles and inserts. The insole and inserts sometimes use wool or fur to line the insides. Faux-fur and cotton insoles are considered vegan-friendly.

Always contact the manufacturer if you can’t figure out if it’s vegan. One brand of rain boots, Hunter, has a great range of boots, but nothing on their site talks about whether the boots at vegan-friendly. Upon contacting the customer care center, they will quickly inform you that their boots cannot be considered as vegan. You can’t find any mention on the Hunter site of the type of animal products they use, but that’s what they have advised.

Our eyes were immediately drawn to this Bogs boot, simply because it looks amazing. Amazeballs was a word thrown around actually. The Bogs boot retains that classic boot look with an added bit of embossing.

Dress like a boss with the Emboss model, a vegan rain boot that has a durable and well-tested rubber make. The embossed design and the rivets on the top make this a great choice for a rainy day or an evening out. It’s a classy look that serves a function as well. What a duo!

What We Liked

The fashion forward look is always great in a rain boot. Fancy Wellies are hot right now. We also like the durable and tested rubber that stretches to meet your feet.

What We Didn’t Like

Compared to other rain boots, the price can seem a bit steep. If you’re prepared to pay the cost for fashion, it shouldn’t worry you that much. Also, it’s had a couple bad raps online about those with high arches. They don’t suit all feet problems and can cause pain to those with support issues. If you’re concerned, use an insert to combat that issue.

Dr. Martens Vegan 1460 Boot

Remember how cool you were back in junior high with your new Doc Martens? Well, we sure do. We loved our old Doc Martens, but we lost them to history so many years ago.

So imagine our delight upon finding these Dr. Marten 1420 boots in a vegan-friendly format. It’s not your typical rain boot, but your feet will remain dry in this classic looking boot.

The Dr. Marten brand has been around for what feels like decades (because it has been decades), so you know they’ll be a great boot. They keep you in fashion, they feel great even after a long day, and your feet remain dry without any issue at all.

The synthetic sole and insole are fabulous for you if you’re concerned about animal products being used. There’s a good chance that you’ll want to reclaim your youth with these rain boots. You’ll also be keeping them for years as many people talk fondly about how many seasons these Dr. Marten boots have kept them dry and warm.

What We Liked

I mean, c’mon, these are Doc Martens! You can’t beat a great looking boot. We also love that they’re so sturdy and reliable as a boot. You’ll probably own these for years to come.

What We Didn’t Like

If we had to nitpick, we’re not a fan of the short boot style. If you’re working in damp conditions or muddy fields, it’s not going to offer you excellent protection. But if you live in the city, you shouldn’t have an issue with that.

A good wide-fitting boot that should accommodate all users. This vegan rain boot even comes with a free return and exchange on sizing and colors if you’re not immediately happy.

The high boots do fit as you’d expect, a problem many people encounter when buying boots online. The tapered thighs and ankles can present problems normally, but this boot seems to have got that sorted out.

The microfiber inside will be comfortable on your feet. So if you’re out in the garden, or you have a long trudge home through puddles and drizzles, the boot should protect your feet from wear and tear.

What We Liked

We’re fans of the price of these boots. A good vegan rain boot can be pricey, so we’re glad that it comes in at a price that everybody can afford. We also like the respect it has online, garnering a good amount of reviews. It doesn’t hurt to have the Earth brand behind it, backing up its vegan claims.

The Roma Short boot is going to be your new favorite. Cast aside the heels and flats because this boot goes with just about anything. It’s made from a natural rubber and a cotton lining. Safe for the animals, good for your feet. That’s a win-win we can get behind.

The lining is also formatted to be quick drying, so you won’t need to worry about wet feet, even in the worst conditions. We’re not saying you can handle a hurricane in these boots, but maybe a Category 3 cyclone or tropical typhoon.

The multi-layered sole is designed to feel fantastic. It’s no fun to wear something stylish if you can’t be comfortable doing so. Your feet will thank you for this purchase.

What We Liked

We wholeheartedly get behind this boot because it’s functional as well as great to wear with, well, anything. You’re going to love it for that too.

But our main love of this boot is that for every boot they sell, a rain boot pair is donated to a child in poverty. Roma believes in social justice, and that’s a great reason to get behind them.

What are UGGs made out of?

UGG boots became a big trend in the 90s’ with teenage girls trying to achieve the look of their favorite celebs. The first person connected to their appearance was Pamela Anderson, when she was back in her “Baywatch” days.

Mrs. Anderson is now one of the most dedicated animal rights activists supported by PETA. She even created her own line called Pammie’s Life that offers Vegan and CF boots made from recycled electronics. (currently unavailable).

UGGs are overpriced boots made by sheepskin that is supposed to come mainly from sheep that are raised for food. The boots are typically made of twin-faced sheepskin with fleece on the inside, a tanned outer surface and a synthetic sole.

As opposed to other brands that use wool attached to a synthetic base to cover the inside part of their boots, UGGs are made of shearling. Shearling is sheepskin with attached fleece, which means that the animal, whether dead or alive, had to be skinned instead of just sheared off its coat.

Are UGG Boots Cruelty Free?

As we mentioned before, many people don’t know about the cruelty that lies behind the production of UGG boots.

The problem with UGGs starts at the claim that the fleeces the company purchases are a byproduct of the meat industry. For its part, UGG Australia does not own or raise the sheep killed to make its boots, and to its defense the company has a policy against purchasing fleeces from producers that practice mulesing.

The thing is that no matter what the end result is, the animals that are being raised do not always live in the best conditions. When the need for the products increases, it is only logical that the number of sheep being raised will grow too.

Sheep are usually crammed in small pens, their ears are hole-punched and they endure a lot of physical pain without anesthetics or pain killers. In many cases, their tails are cut off and many male sheep are castrated.

If we take all these factors into consideration, we can definitely agree that UGGs are not Cruelty Free at all.

Living a vegan lifestyle doesn’t mean you have to give up romantic traditions. All you need to do is give these tired activities a plant-based update!

Here are some ideas to help you replace cruel traditions with sweet, vegan-friendly alternatives.

1 – The Steak Dinner

A big slab of steak isn’t the only way you can celebrate Valentine’s Day! Instead of making a reservation at a steakhouse, consider dining at a vegan restaurant.

If you’re in a metropolitan area, you may have several options available to you. However, if you don’t have a completely vegan restaurant nearby, you can simply opt for vegan meals at your restaurant of choice.

Many Chinese, Japanese, and Indian restaurants have vegan-friendly dishes. My favorite Indian restaurant nearby categorizes their whole menu by “vegetarian” and “non-vegetarian.” Though they don’t market as a veg-friendly establishment, this helps expand your options.

I always consult a few websites before choosing a restaurant. Even after over a decade of veganism, they still help me find new restaurants and dishes!

HappyCow is my first go-to for vegan and vegetarian restaurants. You can search in practically any city across the globe! It also gives plenty of flexibility. You can search everything from 100% vegan restaurants to places with vegan options.

Yelp is another great resource. Look for establishments marked “vegan” or that are tagged with “vegetarians go nuts for this spot.” Don’t forget to search the comments for the best dishes!

2 – The Horse-Drawn Carriage Ride

On the surface, horse-drawn carriage rides sound super romantic. But when you start to dig, it becomes clear that this dreamy scenario is a nightmare for the horse.

Carriage horses usually work in the city, in all kinds of weather. Many states have little to no regulations when it comes to the welfare of these animals. It’s a sad life from the beginning to (a sometimes tragic) end.

Horses are naturally skittish animals. Their tendency to run at loud noises, like a car horn, can cause injury to both the horses and people.

Plus, let’s not pretend that careless drivers aren’t a danger here. With so many people texting while driving, it’s barely safe to walk across a city intersection, much less drive the carriage through.

The reality is there are so many ways to spend time with your sweetheart without a carriage ride.

Here’s a few ideas:

One simple option is to take a walk with your sweetheart. Explore a part of the city you’ve never seen before, admiring the buildings and history behind it.
In a rural area? Find a trail or path through the woods and go for a leisurely stroll or a hike.
If you like the movement aspect, consider a bike ride! If you want to get super romantic, opt for a tandem bicycle.

It’s friendlier to those horses, and it’ll help you build your appetite for dinner!

While the exact ingredient list varies from product to product, the most common animal ingredients in tattoo ink include bone char, glycerin, gelatin, and shellac.

The terms “vegan” and “cruelty-free” are often used interchangeably, especially when it comes to cosmetics and beauty products. You pick up a vegan body wash, and you might assume that it fits in with a vegan lifestyle. By definition alone, they should be completely interchangeable.

Apparently, in the world of marketing, there are no rules.

It can be a huge bummer – especially if you’re finding out that the vegan products you thought were cruelty-free (or vice versa) aren’t.

But don’t be discouraged!

Once you have a handle on the different terms used, it won’t be so scary to navigate the beauty aisle at the store. That way, you can purchase products with confidence that they are 100% in line with your values.

Let’s get a brief rundown of what each of these terms means in different context

VEGAN PRODUCTS

When someone refers to a vegan lifestyle or a person who is vegan, it means they do everything in their means to avoid animal products and exploitation. The ultimate goal of a vegan lifestyle is to cause as little suffering as possible.

However, a “vegan” label on a product is not quite as expansive. When a product, such as foundation, glass cleaner, or perfume, has a “vegan” label, you can rest assured that it does not contain any animal ingredients.

The ingredient list is where the “vegan” label stops. While it probably sounds counterintuitive, a product that carries a “vegan” designation doesn’t mean it wasn’t tested on animals.

If you find a designated vegan product, search the packaging for an additional cruelty-free logo. Ensuring the product is free of any animal products is half the battle!

CRUELTY-FREE PRODUCTS

A label of “cruelty-free” means that the product you’re considering wasn’t tested on animals. This includes both the finished product, as well as any individual ingredients.

You and I both know why animal testing is seriously uncool, whether you’re vegan or not. During animal testing, innocent rabbits, mice, and rats are subjected to painful, and sometimes even lethal, irritation and toxicity tests.

A company testing mascara might rub it into the animal’s eyes or shaved skin to see if it causes a rash. A manufacturer that makes household cleaning products might force an animal to ingest an all-purpose cleaner, to find the lethal dosage of that product. These animals are subject to suffering for people’s own vanity and selfishness.

But it doesn’t have to be that way!

Organizations like Leaping Bunny have made it easy to spot cruelty-free products. PETA also offers a complete, up-to-date list of companies that do and do not test on animals. This way, you can pull the list up on your phone right in the supermarket aisle and find out if a particular manufacturer is designated cruelty-free.

When you do spot a cruelty-free logo, or determine the company does not test on animals, you’re almost there! Next, take a quick scan of the ingredients, looking for common animal-based add-ins like beeswax or glycerin.

When you can check off both these criteria, stock up! That product is 100% vegan-friendly, animal-friendly, and appropriate for a plant-based home.

TIPS FOR ANIMAL-FRIENDLY PURCHASING

First and foremost, don’t beat yourself up if you realize that the products you thought were vegan-friendly turn out not to be. Even after years of veganism, I remember being completely confused when I realized my favorite “vegan” hair care line was tested on animals.

I’ve spoken with long-time vegans who were shocked when their “cruelty-free” makeup turned out to contain carmine – crushed up bugs! After all, who would think to read the ingredient list when the product is designated “cruelty-free”?

When you’re giving your makeup bag and cleaning cabinet a second look, it’s important to remember that veganism is not about perfection. When you initially purchased the offending product, you most likely did so with good intentions – you were doing your best to make an informed decision that was better for the animals.

Even with all the conveniences of the internet, as well as plant-based lifestyles going more mainstream, it is hard to make sure everything is 100% vegan all the time. Because there aren’t any central organizations defining certain terms, marketers can use all kinds of intentionally misleading buzzwords to convince you to buy their product.

Being hard on yourself isn’t going to un-buy those products that turned out to be non-vegan. The best thing you can do for yourself – and for the animals – is to learn from it, and use your newly acquired knowledge during your next shopping trip.

To avoid mistakes and mishaps in the future, take a two-pronged approach. To ensure the product itself doesn’t contain animal products, always do a thorough investigation of the ingredient list. If you’re unsure about a particular ingredient, don’t be afraid to research before you buy!

Shopping for Vegan-Friendly Winter Boots

Like food ingredient lists, it’s important to carefully inspect the materials list on a pair of boots. Animal products can hide in your shoes under countless sneaky names.

Are any of the following materials used in your winter boots? Put ‘em back on the shelf.

LEATHER & SUEDE

Leather and suede are undoubtedly the most common materials in winter boots. These products are usually made from cow skin, but it can also come from pigs, sheep, and deer.

What many people don’t realize is that leather and suede are not “byproducts” of the meat industry. It’s not as though the skins from meat cows are being used for clothing. Many animals killed for leather are raised and slaughtered for their skins only.

Additionally, much leather used in clothing comes from India and China. These countries have little to no animal welfare laws, or those laws are simply not enforced. These animals experience terrible pain and suffering before they are eventually slaughtered.

Suede, another common material used in boots, is also made from animal skins. The skins are rubbed to create a velvet texture, which is the only thing that differentiates it from traditional leather.

Instead of traditional leather or suede, look for synthetic alternatives that have the look and feel of the real thing with none of the cruelty. You can also opt for man-made fabrics like nylon and canvas.

FUR

Like leather, fur is not a byproduct of the meat industry. Animals in this industry are raised specifically for their fur.

These farms deny fur animals any semblance of a natural life. Many are kept in cages, which is extremely uncomfortable and can cause bodily injury. The animals exhibit many of the same behaviors as other caged animals, including pacing and self-mutilation.

Fur from trapped animals is no kinder. Wild animals may be caught in leg traps for hours or days. If they aren’t found by the trapper first, they often succumb to the elements. Fur animals aren’t the only victims here – people’s pets have also been known to get stuck in these cruel and inhumane traps.

To keep the fur intact, fur animals are usually gassed, electrocuted, or have their necks broken. Investigations of Chinese fur farms have found that animals are skinned alive, sometimes remaining conscious for ten minutes after the process.

GRAPHIC CONTENT WARNING

No trim or lining is worth such suffering. Tell companies that this is unacceptable by always choosing fur-free and synthetic options.

SHEARLING

Any former UGG boot lover is probably familiar with shearling. However, it can be unclear as to exactly what this material is.

Some people are under the impression that shearling is the sheared wool of sheep. In reality, shearling is the skin of a sheep who was shorn right before slaughter. The resulting material is a leather-like skin with short “fleece” attached to it.

Because of its warmth, shearling is generally used for lining and trim. Double-check any boots that appear to have a fleece lining or trim, to make sure it’s synthetic or man-made. Leave that cozy sheepskin for the sheep!

WOOL

Wool is often used in boots in the lining, to keep feet warm during the cold months. While the sheep aren’t directly slaughtered for wool, it should still be avoided by vegans.

The most horrifying aspect of wool is “mulesing.” This is the process of removing skin – yes, chunks of flesh – from the hind ends of farmed sheep. Because flies can lay eggs in the skin folds of wool sheep, they must undergo this process without the use of anesthetics or painkillers.

In addition to this practice, the means of keeping sheep for wool means a world of castration, tail docking, and other painful practices that come with animal management. It’s a cruel, unnecessary industry, especially when you consider the number of animal-free alternatives available today.

Stances on Faux Animal Products

Just like vegan sausage and vegan cheese, there are plant-based alternatives when it comes to clothing. Instead of traditional leather and fur, vegans can choose to wear synthetic alternatives that do not contain animal products.

However, there are a few things to consider as you’re deciding whether to don these materials.

There is a camp of people that believe vegans shouldn’t wear synthetic leather or fur, even if they are 100% animal-free. The reasoning is that this creates a demand for these products, and furthers the idea that leather and fur translate to glamor and power. They believe that purchasing and wearing these look-alikes creates demand for the actual animal-based products.

While I certainly can see where these folks are coming from, I ultimately think alternatives to these materials are still vegan. By definition, they are vegan-friendly, as they contain no animal products and no animals were harmed.

Additionally, every purchase of vegan leather or fur sends a message to clothing companies. The message says, loud and clear, that there is demand for fashionable products made without the use of animal materials. The more people who choose animal-friendly products over the cruel alternatives, the more demand is created for vegan-friendly fashion.

If you would prefer not to wear faux fur or leather, even if it is synthetic, there are plenty of fabric options that don’t even pretend to look like animal-based boots.

However, if you simply can’t kick your love of “fur” trim or “suede” boots, you can still contribute to the vegan movement by picking man-made materials.

Either way, you’re showing that fur and leather made from animals are outdated and unacceptable. The choice comes down to your fashion preferences.

How to Choose the Best Tofu Press

Preparing tofu is a lot like playing the guitar.

Anybody can do it, but it takes practice, research, and dedication to truly master the craft.

In my earliest days of working with tofu, I didn’t do much (read: anything) to prepare it for recipes.

I’d cube a block fresh from the package, stir-fry it with some vegetables, and lament about how it didn’t come close to the tofu I so loved from my local Chinese restaurant.

I finally learned that good tofu was synonymous with dry tofu – by pressing water out, it made a better texture and made more room in the tofu for flavor through marinades.

So, I started pressing my tofu the way a lot of folks do at home – wrapping the blocks of tofu in paper towels or dish cloths and balancing some heavy books or a cast-iron pan on top to press the water out.

This got me closer to what I was looking for, but it still wasn’t perfect. On top of that, this method created a lot of waste between the paper towels in the trash and dish cloths in the laundry basket.

Perfection happened when I discovered the wonderful world of the tofu press. So much so, that when asked what single kitchen gadget has changed my life the most, the humble tofu press wins hands-down.

What is a Tofu Press?

So aside from being life-changing, what the heck is a tofu press, anyway?

At a very basic level, a tofu press is a contraption that removes the water from your tofu, resulting in a denser block of tofu with great texture.

By removing the water, you’re able to replace it with flavor via marinades and dressings, and the bone-dry protein is much safer to fry in oil since there is no water to create dangerous spattering.

It gets crispier, too! When your tofu is super dry, you can achieve that gorgeous golden crunchy crust on your tofu cubes.

Tofu presses come in two basic styles

some consist of two plastic or metal plates that you tighten using tension knobs, while other models use a small box with a spring-loaded plate that forces water out of your tofu.

You can think of plate-style presses like a vice for your tofu – the tofu is placed between two plastic or metal slabs, which are then tightened using 2-4 adjustable screws.

Plate-style tofu presses are simple, don’t take up much space in your cabinets, and tend to be the most economical option as far as tofu presses go.

Downsides

While the plate-style press is a good option for people who don’t want to drop a lot of cash on something they aren’t sure they’re going to use, it does require more attention out of both models – you’ll need to tighten the screws every so often to accommodate for your shrinking tofu.

Box Style Tofu Presses

In these models of tofu press, your block of tofu is placed into a plastic or metal container, where a spring-loaded or heavily weighted plate pushes down on the block of tofu, pressing water out and creating a dense and chewy protein.

Downsides

Unlike plate-style presses, box models can only take a standard size block of tofu – a perfectly rectangular one-pound block – without much flexibility for size or shape.

Using any other size, smaller or larger or squigglier, can result in uneven pressing, cracks in the tofu, and inconsistent results.

Upsides

However, box presses are super convenient in that once they’re set up, they’ll continue to press and don’t require any additional attention from you, whereas you need to continually tighten the screws of a plate-style press

You can toss an assembled box press in the fridge when you leave for work and come home to a block of tofu ready for the frying pan – the spring/weight does all the work while you’re away.

Ideal For: Anyone looking for the best value and to save time – this is probably your best choice.

What Kind of Tofu Should I Press?

As I mention in our complete guide to tofu, tofu comes in many textures and consistencies, some better suited to pressing than others.

In general, you’ll only want to press tofu that you would use in stir-fry or salad.

Stick with firm and extra-firm varieties for the best results, since they will hold their shape throughout the pressing process.

Soft and silken tofu, which are best used for blending into creamy sauces and smoothies, will result in a unappetizing paste if you try to press them.

I’ll be completely transparent here and say that I own, and love, the TofuXpress.

A good middle ground price-wise, the TofuXpress won’t make a big dent in your budget, but is of high enough quality where it won’t break (even if, like me, you’re using the thing several times a week).

One of my favorite features of the TofuXpress is that it is compact, and you can use it as is – no need for any baking pans to catch water, etc.

The TofuXpress also comes with a separate lid and doubles as a marinating dish. The spring-loaded press removes the most water possible from the tofu and allows the liquid to be easily poured off with minimal mess.

The one downside of this particular press is the size – it works perfect for evenly pressing a single one-pound block of tofu at a time. You’ll have to press anything larger in separate pieces, and smaller pieces tend to come out a little funny-looking unless you center everything perfectly.

However, I find it much easier to press the entire block at once and store the pressed pieces in the refrigerator for later use.

I’ve had my little press for years now, and even after using it several times a week since purchase, I still get consistently great results.

The Ferrari of Tofu Presses (Very High Quality)

Made from stainless steel and applying 4.5 pounds of pressure to your tofu, the Ninja Press is the Ferrari of tofu presses, promising to remove 35% of the tofu’s weight in water.

The Ninja Press is an extremely high quality piece and will probably last you long enough to become a family heirloom.

However, at $100 a pop, it can be cost-prohibitive, especially if you’re not someone who eats a ton of tofu throughout the week.

People do note that this press comes in handy for more than just tofu – including squeezing water out of potatoes for home fries or shaping vegan sliders – but even then, a hundred dollars can be a lot of money to drop on a single kitchen gadget.

While it does an excellent job at creating a pressed slab of tofu, it doesn’t do much else, so this may be more than you’re looking to spend on a press.

Tofu Presser - Super Tofu Press

Best For Those on a Budget

The Super Tofu Press is an economical option for a first tofu press, made from two slabs tightened together by screws to press the water out of your tofu.

The plates are made from BPA-free plastic and promise to get the water out of your tofu in a mere 15 minutes.

It doesn’t take up much room on your countertop or in your cabinet, either, and is super easy to clean.

However, the Super Tofu Press can be a little messy to use, and it requires that you place the apparatus in a baking dish or on a plate to catch any liquid pressed out of the block.

Because you must also tighten each of the four screws individually, it can be hard to center your tofu within the contraption, and can result in some unevenly-pressed – and shaped – results.

If you’re not looking to drop too much money while you’re figuring out if a tofu press is something worth your money and time, this can be a good option to look into, but it is not as simple or straightforward as other models.

Press Your Tofu, Change Your Life

While most people would say their Kitchenaid mixer or Vitamix blender was their most prized kitchen possession, no other appliance or contraption holds a candle to my beloved TofuXpress.

Without this, I would still be stuck in the days of sad, soggy tofu, completely unaware of the beautiful world that awaited me on the other side of the press.

So what can you do with your tofu once it’s been pressed?

Dense, chewy pressed tofu makes a perfect protein for stir fry – just heat some oil in your frying pan or cast iron skillet until it’s screaming hot and cook sliced tofu until golden brown, crispy, and delicious on all sides.

Alternatively, one of our favorite tofu dishes in my house is Buffalo Tofu Nuggets – place cubed, pressed tofu in a frying pan with some Earth Balance and hot sauce, toss to coat the tofu thoroughly, and serve alongside vegan bleu cheese dressing and celery sticks.
